Since the early 1970s I have had the yearly privilege to attend the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). I have always been quite impressed by the extensive offering of educational presentations and research reports available for ASA meeting attendees. The extra added value at every meeting is the opportunity to mingle with colleagues, exchange ideas about current practice, develop links for future joint research and educational projects and interact on a personal level that is so welcome for all of us! Clearly, this is all aimed at delivering better care for our patients!
从70年代开始我就参加了美国麻醉学会年会。那些参加会议的学者所展示的广泛提供的教学演讲和研究报告给我留下了深刻印象。更可贵的是每场会议都能为与会者提供了同行之间的交流机会，就当前的麻醉实践工作，未来研究协作和教育项目等方面进行沟通，这种基于个人的交流方式得到了大家的认同。而这些交流促进更好地为患者服务。
The Annual Meeting of the Chinese Society of Anesthesiologists (CSA) is, not unexpectedly, similar to the ASA meeting style and ambiance as I personally discovered when I had the recent and fortunate opportunity to mingle with over 4,000 attendees in Jinan. The emphasis on educational programs and the presentation of new evidenced-based scientific research was most obvious with the large number of sessions and presentations at the CSA meeting.

I would like to share with you my observations about two of the many presentations at the CSA meeting, two that I believe are important in the growth and development of the CSA.

One presentation of note at the CSA meeting was a broad and in-depth review of what the ASA is as a professional organization. Alex Hannenberg, MD, ASA Immediate PastPresident, provided this overview of the ASA and his focus was very clear: At every chance, his suggestions and offers queried how the CSA and ASA could partner for the mutual benefit of their members and, ultimately, for their patients. This message was quite evident from the CSA, as elucidated by its current President, Yu Buwei, MD, PhD: How can the CSA and ASA link their respective members so they can learn and conduct research projects together and enrich each other’s professional experiences? ASA is exploring how to enhance its global outreach and undoubtedly there will be cross-fertilization between societies like the ASA and CSA. Individual institutions in the US are doing likewise. One example of this is the Penn-China Anesthesia Partnership Program that has developed over the past several years under the leadership of Lee Fleisher, MD, with the exchange of anesthesiologists from the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and anesthesiologists from numerous Departments of Anesthesiology across all of China under the auspices of CSA. Other anesthesiology groups throughout the US are conducting similar programs.

Another presentation at the 2011 CSA meeting was the second China-US Symposium and Debate on Education (a 4-hour symposium on simulation as a tool for education), co-hosted by the CSA and Penn-China Anesthesia Partnership Program. Anesthesiologists from China represented a standing-room-only group that was actively engaged during two computer simulations conducted with participants interacting with the software presentations of crisis management cases. Having observed actual computer-based simulations, the audience then listened to presentations about how simulation can be used to educate both residents and experienced anesthesiology practitioners. A pro-con debate set the stage for the final portion of the program with lively discussion by the audience about how simulation educational methodology might be incorporated into the educational curriculum for Chinese anesthesiologists. The focus of what place simulation might gain in learning for the Chinese is right in sync with the current philosophy of the ACGME, ASA and ABA with residency education and MOCA in the US.

The Annual Meeting of the Chinese Society of Anesthesiologists made one principle abundantly clear, namely that no matter how large and diverse we may think the world is, anesthesiologists across the globe have issues to solve and they are solving them in a collaborative manner that will undoubtedly benefit patients worldwide!

One of the points stressed during Alex Hannenberg’s plenary presentation as highlighted by this slide is the ASA’s interest in Global Humanitarian Outreach and collaboration with other anesthesiology organizations across the globe such as the Chinese Society of Anesthesiologists. 在Alex Hannenberg’s的公开演讲中非常强调的一个观点就是ASA关注的是全球人道主义以及和全球类似中国麻醉医师协会这样的其他麻醉组织的合作。
 
A standing-room only audience listened with eager anticipation as a computer based simulation was demonstrated.
